The LinkedIn post character limit is 3,000 characters. Every space, line break, emoji, hashtag and link counts toward that total. The number that decides whether your post gets read is much smaller: the feed shows only the first two or three lines before a "see more" link, so your opening lines carry the whole post.
So how do founders and owners of small B2B firms with no marketing hire handle LinkedIn content? Keep the routine simple. Write a draft and keep it well inside the cap. Put the point in the first line, post on a steady weekly rhythm and approve each post yourself before it goes out. Length is rarely the real problem. Consistency and a weak first line usually are.
SocialPost drafts on-brand posts every week, and nothing publishes until the owner approves. It renders a brand-correct visual, formats the post for each platform and schedules the post.
LinkedIn character limits at a glance
These are the facts that matter when you write a LinkedIn post. LinkedIn can change its limits, so check the LinkedIn Help page on posting if the composer ever refuses a draft.
- Maximum post length. What applies: 3,000 characters. Why it matters to you: The composer will not publish a longer post.
- Spaces and line breaks. What applies: Count toward the limit. Why it matters to you: Short paragraphs with blank lines between them use characters too.
- Emojis and symbols. What applies: Count toward the limit. Why it matters to you: Treat each one as part of your budget.
- Hashtags, @mentions and links. What applies: Count toward the limit. Why it matters to you: A long tracking link can eat a full line of room.
- Text shown before "see more". What applies: The first two or three lines, depending on the screen. Why it matters to you: Your hook has to land inside this space.
- Writing that needs more room. What applies: A LinkedIn article or newsletter. Why it matters to you: Use these for long guides instead of cramming a post.
What counts toward the 3,000 characters
LinkedIn counts every character you type or paste into the post box. A draft that looks short on your laptop can be closer to the cap than you think, because formatting habits add up. Here is what uses your budget:
- Letters, numbers and punctuation. The obvious part. Every comma and full stop counts.
- Spaces and blank lines. The gaps between words and the empty lines between paragraphs all count. A post built from one-line paragraphs spends a lot of characters on white space.
- Emojis and pasted symbols. Arrows, check marks and bullet symbols copied from another app count as characters, the same as letters.
- Hashtags and @mentions. The # sign, the word after it and the space before it all count.
- Links. The full URL counts. Shorten any long link before you paste it in.
- Fake bold and italic text. Tools that make "bold" text on LinkedIn swap your letters for special Unicode symbols. Those symbols count toward the limit, and screen readers often read them out badly, so use them sparingly or skip them.
Text inside an image does not count toward the post limit. A clear visual can carry a chart, a quote or a list of steps without spending a single character of your caption.
How much of your post shows before "see more"
LinkedIn trims every long post in the feed. Readers see the opening lines, then a "see more" link. The exact cut-off depends on the device, and a phone screen shows less than a desktop screen. Most of your buyers will scroll past on a phone, so write for the shorter cut.
The rule for the first two lines is plain. Line one states the finding, the number or the claim. Line two gives the reader a reason to tap "see more". Openers like "Excited to share some news" waste the only space a scrolling buyer reads. So does engagement bait such as "Comment YES below". Lead with the useful thing instead.
How long should a LinkedIn post be for a B2B founder?
There is no single right length. The 3,000-character cap is a ceiling, not a target. One idea fits in two to four short paragraphs. A lesson with steps can run longer, as long as every paragraph earns its place.
The bigger question is why a founder should post at all. LinkedIn reports more than 1.3 billion members. In the Content Marketing Institute survey published October 8, 2025, 76% of the 1,015 B2B marketers surveyed named LinkedIn among their three most effective thought leadership channels.
Timing matters too. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, in work for the LinkedIn B2B Institute, estimates that because firms switch providers about every five years, up to 95% of businesses are not in the market for a given service at any one time. Most of your future buyers are not buying today. When they start looking, they check your profile and your recent posts before the first call. A steady record of plain, specific posts does more for that buyer than one perfect long post. Good LinkedIn content for founders is mostly a habit of showing up. Our guide to the best time to post on LinkedIn covers when to schedule.
A worked example: a post that fits
Here is a template you can reuse this week. Fill the brackets with real details from your own work. Use only results a client has agreed you can share.
- Line one, the finding: "[Type of client] cut [task] from [old time] to [new time] after we changed one step."
- Line two, the reason to keep reading: "The step was boring. That is why the change worked."
- Three short paragraphs: what was broken, what your team changed, and what the client saw afterward. One idea per paragraph.
- One line on who you help: "We help [type of firm] do [specific outcome]."
- A plain next step: "If your team has the same problem, send us a message."
Filled in, this structure stays far below the 3,000-character cap. That leaves room for a short link or two hashtags without trimming. Before you schedule, paste the finished text into the LinkedIn composer and read the preview on your phone. Check that lines one and two show above "see more". AI assistants often miscount characters, so trust the composer over the chat window.
What to do when your draft runs past 3,000 characters
Long drafts usually come from an AI asked to "write a LinkedIn post" with no length guide. Fix the draft in this order:
- Cut the warm-up. Delete the first paragraph and check whether the post still makes sense. The post usually reads better.
- Remove repeated points. Drafts often say the same thing twice, once as a story and once as a summary. Keep one version.
- Shorten links and drop extra hashtags. Two or three relevant hashtags are plenty.
- Move the list into an image. Steps, checklists and numbers can live on a clean visual instead of in the caption.
- Split the post into a series. Two posts a week apart often perform the job of one long post, and give you a second reason to show up.
- Turn the post into a LinkedIn article. If the idea needs real depth, write the article and share it with a short post.
How to post consistently on LinkedIn without a marketing team
Knowing the limit is the easy part. The hard part is how to post consistently on LinkedIn without a marketing team, when client work fills the week. Our post on social media mistakes startup founders make covers the usual traps.
One shortcut to avoid: tools that like, comment or connect on your behalf, engagement pods that trade likes, and bulk DM software. LinkedIn's User Agreement restricts software that acts on your behalf, and buyers notice when the activity is fake. Do not use them. A person should write or approve every word that goes out under your name.
The useful question is which step you keep skipping. Here is what each common option does:
- LinkedIn's built-in scheduler. Available inside the post composer. Built for a founder who posts text or phone photos to LinkedIn only, a few times a week.
- Buffer. A simple posting queue across several social networks. Built for a small team that already writes and designs posts itself and wants one calendar.
- Hootsuite. Scheduling plus a shared inbox and reporting. Built for larger teams with a staff member whose job is social media.
- SocialPost.ai. The operational layer between your AI and your social accounts. An AI assistant can send a draft to SocialPost through MCP, a standard way for an AI assistant to connect to other software. SocialPost drafts on-brand posts, renders a brand-correct visual and formats each post for its platform. You approve every post. Nothing publishes without your sign-off. Built for a founder who wants each post to look like a company shipped it, with no designer.
How to choose: pick the tool that removes the step you skip most often. If you skip posting because you have no time to write, an AI assistant fixes that, and our list of ways to never run out of content ideas helps. If you write fine but the post never gets a visual or a time slot, you need a LinkedIn scheduling tool that also handles the visual and your approval. If a full-time social hire runs the accounts, team software with an inbox and reports earns its place. Do not buy LinkedIn content marketing software for a step you already do well.
Your next step: write your next caption in the AI you already use, keep the hook in the first two lines, and let SocialPost handle the visual, the format and the schedule. Start free on the Free plan, no card needed.

FAQ
What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
A LinkedIn post can be up to 3,000 characters long, according to LinkedIn's own Help page. Spaces, line breaks, emojis, hashtags and links all count toward that 3,000.
Do spaces and emojis count toward the LinkedIn limit?
Yes. LinkedIn counts every character in the post box, including spaces, blank lines between paragraphs, emojis, pasted symbols and the full text of any link.
How many characters show before "see more" on LinkedIn?
The feed shows the first two or three lines before the "see more" link. The exact cut-off depends on the device, and phones show less than desktop screens, so put your main point in the first line.
What happens if my LinkedIn post is over 3,000 characters?
The composer will not publish a post over the limit. Cut the warm-up paragraph, remove repeated points, move lists into an image, split the post into a series, or turn the idea into a LinkedIn article.
Is a longer LinkedIn post better for a B2B founder?
Not by default. The 3,000-character cap is a ceiling, not a target. A clear first line and a steady weekly habit matter more than length, because most buyers read your recent posts only when they start looking for a provider.
Can ChatGPT or Claude check the character count for me?
AI assistants often miscount characters. Draft your post, then paste it into the LinkedIn composer and check the preview on your phone before you approve it.
